The other Bird has done it again, this time in the Travers Stakes.

Summer Bird splashed his way to a 3 1/2-length victory over long shot Hold Me Back on Saturday and added thoroughbred racing's Midsummer Derby to his Belmont Stakes victory over Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird two months ago.

After the Belmont, Summer Bird finished second to superstar filly Rachel Alexandra in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Aug. 2. Trainer Tim Ice said all week his colt was ready for big race in the 1 1/4-mile Travers at Saratoga Race Course. And Summer Bird delivered in the rain under jockey Kent Desormeaux.

Favorite Quality Road had a poor start and finished third in the seven-horse field.

The winning time for the race was 2:02.83.

I thought Calvin Borel on Warrior's Reward would pull it out, but Summer Bird took a stand. Great race. Quality Road was the favorite and he is an amazing horse, but I don't think he liked the sloppy track at all.
